Rocky the Bear Rescued from Cruelty in Pakistan

A seven-year-old black bear named Rocky has been rescued from a life of abuse in Punjab, Pakistan, where he was forced to participate in 35 illegal bear-baiting fights. This horrific practice, though banned, still occurs in some regions, subjecting animals to immense suffering.

The Rescue Mission

Rocky's rescue was a joint effort by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, Punjab Wildlife Department, and the international animal welfare organization Four Paws. After being freed from captivity, he was transported to Islamabad for urgent medical care.

Rocky's Condition and Medical Treatment

Veterinarians discovered that Rocky had endured severe injuries, including a fractured jaw, missing teeth, and multiple wounds on his ears from dog bites sustained during fights. He also had a metal ring and chain embedded in his muzzle, which required immediate surgical removal.

Dr. Amir Khalil, who led the medical team from Four Paws, described Rocky’s condition as critical but treatable. The bear is now under round-the-clock veterinary care and is slowly recovering from his traumatic past.

The Fight Against Bear-Baiting

Despite being outlawed, bear-baiting remains a cruel underground practice in Pakistan, where bears are chained and forced to fight against trained dogs for entertainment. Organizations like Four Paws are actively working with local authorities to rescue these animals and shut down illegal operations.

Rocky’s New Home

Once he is stable, Rocky will be relocated to the Balkasar Bear Sanctuary in Punjab, a safe haven for rescued bears. Established in 2010, the sanctuary provides rehabilitation and natural habitat for bears that have suffered from abuse.

A Hopeful Future

Rocky’s rescue is a sign of progress in Pakistan’s fight against animal cruelty. With continued efforts from wildlife organizations and law enforcement, there is hope for a future where animals like Rocky can live free from harm.
